"The 'Mary' in Terry" in-progress, Step 5

Just a bit more work remains to be done here on the skin tones and robe, and at this point in the portrait I will also add in the background color so that I can see any light and value adjustments that may be necessary on the figure.

That brilliant blue color really draws the eye, and keeps it there. You do such a lovely job with fabric.

Just incredible, Mona. You are such a master. I'm fascinated that you can leave the background for last. Do you know the hue and value in advance, or choose at this point what will work best with the figure?

Thanks Dominique---(I was so touched that Dominique gave up her camera, which she values for posting new blog art, for her daughter's 3-wk. trip to Thailand. What a loving Mom!)

Deb, and Akiko, thanks. It helps me to get positive feedback on the fabric---rendering crushed velvet in pastel is a challenge, and even with lots of blue pastels I can only approximate it's colors. I'm hoping to finish this pastel soon.

Liz, thanks. I don't have as much experience in pastel as I do in egg tempera, but I'm trying it. I'll answer your question further in my next post, but just briefly, it's more for practical reasons.

So beautiful, Mona!
And I thought this WAS the background color, heehee. Can't wait to see what it will look like!
